The final in-person New York City Authors Guild Event before the COVID-19 lockdown. This was a smaller event, more like a meetup for writers who were unable to attend the previous week's event on author marketing.
At the event I shared some new and unexpected ideas for how to approach author and book marketing. Many of the authors I've spoken to have expressed similar frustrations about marketing. Mostly that they feel overwhelmed, confused and unsure about how best to engage their readers.
At the NY Authors Guild events I help authors understand that marketing is just another way of connecting to readers who are interested in the topics they write about. It's a lot stressful to market your work when you only have to focus on connecting rather than getting likes or follows.
We also talked about coming up with ways to enjoy the process of choosing what to share. When authors dig into the inspiration behind why they write what they write they'll discover a treasure trove of interesting things to share with their readers.
I was thrilled to hear that attendees felt a renewed sense of enthusiasm about marketing. Which was truly the whole point of the evening. If writers can hold onto the enthusiasm and wonder that comes with writing and creating when they're marketing, then it becomes less what they have to do and more about what they get to do.
